What changed
Google added support for generating and downloading files in Gemini earlier this year. The new step, reported by The Verge, lets users adjust those files without leaving the app, covering PDFs, Google Docs, Google Sheets, slide decks, Markdown, TXT files and code.
Google says documents can be expanded for full-screen editing, and text can be highlighted to ask Gemini questions or request changes, such as selecting a table and asking for it to be turned into a graph.
Who is affected and what is available
The capability is available starting today for all Gemini users, according to The Verge. Availability differs by format and platform: PDF preview and editing work on the web and on mobile, while all other listed file formats are currently only in the web version.
Users could already edit files through Gemini integrations inside Google Workspace apps, such as the Gemini bar in Google Docs. The Verge notes Anthropic also released a feature earlier this year that lets users generate and edit documents and presentations within Claude chats.
Can Gemini edit PDFs on mobile?
Yes. According to The Verge, PDF preview and editing work on both the web and mobile versions of Gemini. The other supported formats, including Google Docs, Sheets, slides, Markdown, TXT and code, are web-only for now.
