Microsoft plans multi-gigawatt Azure Maia rollout from 2027

Microsoft says Azure Maia 200 is now serving production workloads and Maia 300 arrives in 2027, with plans to scale Maia to multi-gigawatt deployments.

THE ESSENTIALS

The story in focus

Microsoft says its Azure Maia 200 chip is now handling production workloads, including Copilot, and that the next generation, Maia 300, will begin production deployments in 2027. Microsoft plans to scale the Maia family to multi-gigawatt deployments starting that year, making it the primary inference system for its products and services.

  • Maia 200 is now serving Microsoft production workloads, including Copilot, with GitHub Copilot and Microsoft Foundry to follow by end of year.
  • Microsoft expects Maia 300 to deliver 40% more tokens per megawatt than leading GPU-based systems.

What is live now

Microsoft said Maia 200 is now serving its production workloads, including Microsoft Copilot, and supporting the MAI team in developing next-generation models. GitHub Copilot and Microsoft Foundry are to follow by the end of the year.

The company said Maia 200 is deploying across the United States, Europe and Australia. It claims up to 1.7x more tokens per watt for built-in AI features in Teams, Copilot and Cowork experiences compared with leading GPU infrastructure.

What Maia 300 promises

Microsoft describes Maia 300 as an inference-first design for long-context, memory-intensive workloads. It cites 18.0 TB/s of peak memory bandwidth from eight HBM4 stacks within a 950-watt TDP, and a multi-chiplet architecture using TSMC's N2P process for compute chiplets.

A 96-accelerator rack is quoted at a 167-kilowatt power envelope, 27.6 TB of HBM capacity and 1.7 PB/s of aggregate bandwidth. Microsoft forecasts 40% more tokens per megawatt than leading GPU systems and up to 7x the rack-scale token throughput of Maia 200 in a full 96-accelerator configuration.

Timing and availability

Maia 300 will begin production deployments in 2027, and Microsoft plans to scale the Maia family to multi-gigawatt deployments starting then. Microsoft said it will share more at Ignite 2026 next month; no pricing or general customer availability was given.

When will Azure Maia 300 be available?

Microsoft says Maia 300 will begin production deployments in 2027, when the company plans to start scaling the Maia family to multi-gigawatt deployments. No customer pricing or broader availability date was disclosed.
