Google announces AI initiatives for crops, education and MSMEs in India
Google DeepMind and Google.org announced work on a sorghum genetic atlas, expanded AI teacher training and $15 million for Indian small businesses.
The story in focus
Google announced new India-focused AI initiatives spanning crop science, education and small business support. Google DeepMind, Google.org and research partners will build an open-access sorghum genetic atlas. Google has trained over 80,000 educators and is expanding that program, while Google.org is providing $15 million to The/Nudge for MSMEs.
- Google DeepMind and partners plan an open-access genetic atlas of sorghum, drawing on a sample from ICRISAT's genebank of over 44,000 seeds from more than 90 countries
- Google's Agricultural Understanding models are moving into public preview for developers, startups and researchers
- Google.org is providing $15 million to The/Nudge to fund AI tools for India's MSMEs

Food security and agriculture
Google DeepMind and Google.org, through the AI Collaborative for Food Security, are collaborating with ICRISAT, HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology and the University of Washington's Department of Genome Sciences on an open-access genetic atlas for sorghum. It will draw on a representative sample from ICRISAT's genebank of over 44,000 seeds from more than 90 countries. The aim is to help breeders develop more resilient, productive sorghum varieties faster than traditional trial-and-error methods, which can take a decade.
Google also said its India-first Agricultural Understanding models now provide insights for 11 countries and are expanding to public preview, giving developers and researchers simplified API access. It cited Amnex integrating the agri model APIs into Gujarat's Krushi Pragati platform, where advisories reached over 600,000 farmers.
Education and small businesses
The Google AI Educator Series, launched in May with five state and regional partners, has trained over 80,000 educators, according to the company. Google is expanding it through partnerships with Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Sikkim and the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, and launching a free self-paced online version in English, with Hindi, Marathi, Telugu, Assamese, Odia and Punjabi expected later this month.
Google.org is providing $15 million to The/Nudge to accelerate growth of India's micro, small and medium enterprises. The initiative will fund AI tools for credit access, market discovery and compliance, with an open call for proposals and a multilingual, voice-led platform to train local talent in Tier 3 and 4 towns. Google says India has more than 90 million MSMEs employing over 345 million people.
What is the sorghum genetic atlas meant to do?
It is intended as an open-access global public good that helps breeders and researchers identify promising plant combinations and develop more resilient, productive sorghum varieties faster than traditional trial-and-error methods.
